Book Summaries

A closer look at the books in my personal collection:

A First Course in General Relativity book cover

A First Course in General Relativity, Second Edition

Bernard Schutz

Read

Summary

For those of you who are curious about the actual physics of Einstein's general theory of relativity and why the subjects of spacetime geometry and gravitational fields continue to fascinate us well into the 21st century.

Advanced Engineering Thermodynamics book cover

Advanced Engineering Thermodynamics, Fourth Edition

Adrian Bejan

Read

Summary

This is written primarily for engineering science students; however, it is a reference that provides a great treatment of the scientific principles of entropy and energy conversion.

Dungeon Crawler Carl book cover

Dungeon Crawler Carl

Matt Dinniman

Plan To Read

Summary

I am greatly anticipating listening to this humorous science-fiction fantasy about a survivor forced to navigate a deadly dungeon after an alien invasion.

Quantum Mechanics: The Theoretical Minimum book cover

Quantum Mechanics: The Theoretical Minimum

Leonard Susskind

Read

Summary

While this treatment of a formidible topic is mathematically rigorous, it gives a gentle introduction to quantum mechanics, from quantum states to fundamental physical principles.

The Eleventh Plague book cover

The Eleventh Plague

Jeff Hirsch

Read

Summary

This short post-apocalyptic novel follows a young survivor of a world destroyed, but hope persists and rebuilding will occur.

The Road to Reality book cover

The Road to Reality

Roger Penrose

In Progress

Summary

Billed as a comprehensive exploration of the mathematical foundations of physics, covering geometry, relativity, quantum mechanics, and cosmology, it is this reader's initial opinion that its honest approach attempts to scratch the surface of a great many diverse sub-topics.

To Sleep in a Sea of Stars book cover

To Sleep in a Sea of Stars

Christopher Paolini

Summary

This science-fiction adventure is about a xenobiologist who explores distant planets using our somewhat modern-day technologies, though obvious creative licenses are taken based on a few reviews.

Why These Books?

Throughout the millinea one question has remained universal: Why? Even with centuries of scientific discovery and philosophical inquiry, humanity has yet to truly explain the nature of the universe or our place within it. While philosophical perspectives have attempted to address these basic mysteries, I find myself particularly drawn to the mathematical and physical principles that govern the natural world.

The books in my collection reflect this curiosity and my desire to explore the foundations of scientific understanding. From thermodynamics and relativity to quantum mechanics and cosmology, each subject offers a different perspective on the laws that shape our universe. Yet, as our knowledge expands, we barely begin to understand what it is we do not know. Do we even know what we don't know? Further, are we even scratching the surface of what remains unexplained?

The two books, which I have yet to read, are strictly in my collection for pleasurable reading purposes. Most of my collection includes books that required many many hours of study, therefore, I wish to take a step back for a while.
